The Tiny Story of a Reluctant Detective Forced to Act

"Detective, I have a job for you," said Johnathon Martin, the chief of police.

"And what is that job, sir?" asked Detective Charlotte Murray, looking up from her paperwork.

"You know that missing actress?"

"Yeh." She nodded, waiting for him to get to the point.

"She was an actress. She had a job--" Charlotte knew what was coming.

"And you want me to go do it for her until we find her."

Martin hesitated, then said, "Uh...yeah."

Charlotte groaned. "Aww, chief, you know I'm a terrible actress! Can't they find someone else to fill the part?"

The chief shrugged and said, "They could, but I told them I had someone who could take care of the part!"

"Why can't Margaret Davis do it?"

"You kidding me?! Margaret is the worst actor alive! That's why she's not an actress! Also, she threatened to quit the force if I made her do it...Anyway, you're my best undercover detective, and besides, you look like the missing actress. I want some inside information!"

Charlotte rolled her eyes and grumbled, "Ugh! Fine, I'll do it."

Detective Charlotte Murray drove to the theater, and slipped backstage as discreetly as possible. After getting the details of her part from the director, and her costume from the costumes manager, she entered the dressing room and came out wearing the most ridiculous and cumbersome dress she had ever set eyes on.

She had a little over three minutes to memorize her part, but she did so quite well. Being a detective, she'd had many chances to practice memorizing things on the spot.

She heard someone whisper, "Murray, you're on!" and moved to the edge of stage left.

"I must be dreaming," said the detective as she stepped onto the stage.

************************************************************************************************************

The crowd loved her. She hated the crowd. She did, however, get some inside information on the whereabouts of the missing actress. A few hours later, the police had mounted an attack on a warehouse where the actress was being held hostage.

Detective Charlotte Murray went home, satisfied with her days work, and happy with the thought of the actress who's part she had played, safe at last.

The End.
